paddle board magic
Tracey Joines
What was your inspiration for this piece?
I was inspired to make this piece two years ago. It was my birthday and I was paddle boarding in Waikiki with my friends and family. I remember looking at Diamond Head and thinking it was the coolest experience. Then a turtle surfaced by my board and looked at me for the longest time. It was truly magical and I knew then that I wanted to make a piece of jewelry so I could always connect to that moment.
Tell us about the creation process including any obstacles overcome or surprises.
I learned a lot through this process. I knew I wanted to make multiples so I could share the necklaces with my friends who were there on that magical day. It was obviously more work to make five necklaces, but I found with each step my skills improved because of the practice. I’ve recently learned a new technique called Keum-Boo where you fuse 24K gold onto silver. I loved adding the gold to the paddle handles.
Jewelry is a way for people to connect, whether through gemstones, artistry or experience. Being able to create a piece of jewelry that bonds my friends and family to a moment in time is rewarding and I’m incredibly thankful. I will continue to work on my skills and am very appreciative of the people at BARN that encourage and teach others how to be successful in their craft.
